The drums had stopped, but Mike took little comfort in the silence. Silence led to thought. If this place was indeed representative of his mind, as Anita had implied it was, then thought was a curse. Maybe even a death sentence.
Mike sat alone under the tree, hands tightly pressed against the sides of his head. Nothing could escape his mind, he thought. Nothing. Donât think of anything. But what if new thoughts werenât the real danger? Evil had already rummaged around in the basement of his experience â that much was clear. Perhaps it was too late to stop whatever was happening.
âSunrise,â Mike said, shivering despite the incessant heat. âIf I can make it to sunrise then maybe this shithole will fizzle out like a nightmare.â But he couldnât escape the thought that followed â what if there was no morning in this place? And if there was, what if the sun came up black and white?
âOh fuck.â
His throat was dry, aching for water. But what chance was there of finding water in a place like this? He was pretty sure that the roots of these trees absorbed evil. And what other life was there? There was only the stagnant stink of death and silence.
Mike leaned his head against the trunk. He felt his eyelids close over despite a feeble protest about the importance of staying awake. About the people in the trees. But Mike was exhausted and he was almost asleep when he heard the sound of roaring engines from nearby. The raucous disturbance pulled him back into the land of the living. He jumped to his feet, dizzy and off-balance. As the fog cleared, he rubbed his eyes and saw a wave of bright light gathering at the edge of the woodlands. Mike crept towards the light, walking for several minutes before he reached a steep incline that led down to where the woods met the road. Heâd been that close to the road since coming into the dark woods? Felt like heâd been trapped in the heart of the woods, miles from anywhere. Or maybe things were still moving, like the trees that had moved closer to the car.
He dropped into a crouch, finding a gap in a nest of overgrown foliage.
Mike peered through the branches at a small convoy of vehicles. The convoy was slowing to a stop on the single-track lane, the same one that had brought the Genius Car from Scarsdale to here. Mike saw cars, vans, pickups and there was something that looked like a big yellow school bus at the back. It was so bright on the road that Mike didnât miss a thing; it was as if there was a set of giant stadium spotlights hanging overhead. He noticed the writing on the side of the nearest van. One word, etched in red letters, scrawled in paint that looked like it was still dripping.
AmeriKKKa.
âYouâve got to be shitting me,â Mike said.
The engines began to cut out one by one. Thatâs when Mike became aware of the sound of dogs barking down there.
